Victory For Online Casinos When we last checked in with Representative Barney Frank it was clear that he was trying to keep his goal of legalizing online casinos before the end of the year. It looked as though it would not be possible to meet his deadline but it was very refreshing to know that even as the year ends he was still working hard. Good news, but not a victory. Finally for the first time all year it seems that online casinos can finally report a victory on the federal level. It has been a year of good news and big promises for online casinos. With bated breath we waited for Representative Barney Frank to introduce legislation that would regulate online casinos on a federal level. Finally we got HR 2266 and HR 2267. Unfortunately, both of those pieces of legislation got put on the very back burner of the House Financial Services Committee due to the economic quagmire that the country is currently trudging its way through. From there things sort of grinded to a halt as far as progress is concerned. There was news every few weeks that Frank had managed to garner more support for his bill, but no big victory. This week it is different. Apparently US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has given in to the pressure applied by politicians that have insisted he postpone the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act until June 1st of next year. Although HR 2266 would have postponed the act for one year, the purpose was to give Frank enough time to change gambling law in the country. |
