Conversation with a Blond I found myself in a bar in New York. I was waiting for a friend to get off work and I struck up conversation with an attractive blond woman. She, the bar tender, and I spoke on a variety of topics: movies, burgers, and even illegal drugs. I can not speak for the bar tender, but I myself am not a drug user. So it was interesting to find myself defending marijuana when this woman expressed how in appropriate she thought it was for Hollywood films to treat and illegal drug like pot as a silly and humorous issue. All of my writing on the issue of online casinos has really changed my opinion on many things considered illegal in this country. It comes down to the issue of regulation versus prohibition. There are certain things that do need to be prohibited. Murder, rape, theft. These are crimes that threaten the integrity of a society. However, there are other things like alcohol, online gambling, or even drug use. Alcohol consumption, gambling at online casinos, and smoking pot are all things that carry with it a stigma and doing any of these activities in excess is ill advised. But the real bottom line is that these are all activities people are going to partake in regardless of social acceptance or legal standing. In cases like this regulation is really the only option. Regulation eliminates the crime element and improves the quality of the product for those that chose to participate. Well competition improves the product; regulation improves the safety of the industry. |
